Infantino breaks silence on Balogun case after Trump call

🇧🇪
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has finally spoken on the Folarin Balogun controversy, issuing an official statement that reaffirms the independence of FIFA’s judicial bodies after a flurry of calls, including a recent confirmation from U.S. President Donald Trump that he had contacted the federation. The announcement lifting Folarin Balogun’s suspension was made 24 hours ago, reigniting debate over his eligibility for the United States national team. The decision prompted immediate reactions from various stakeholders across the football world. Five hours after former President Donald Trump publicly confirmed that he had contacted FIFA, the issue gained further prominence. Trump’s involvement was framed as an effort to ensure the United States could field the striker. In an official FIFA communiqué, Infantino stated, "I wish to reaffirm a fundamental principle of FIFA governance. The judicial bodies of FIFA are independent. They operate autonomously, apply the FIFA disciplinary code and rule on cases based on the applicable regulations and the specific facts submitted to them." Infantino added that he receives calls from heads of state, government officials, football actors and business leaders worldwide on many topics. During his conversation with Trump, he explained that a judicial procedure involving FIFA’s independent bodies was already underway and would be decided in due time by the competent authorities. He emphasized that this is how the FIFA system functions and that he will always defend the principle. Whether these reassurances will satisfy the Belgian Football Association remains uncertain. The United States will face Belgium in a live broadcast on Walfoot.be at 02:00 on 07 July. Fans are invited to register for the newsletter to receive updates.
