Hull City fills goalkeeper void with Butland as Dublin exits
Facing a sudden shortage between the posts after the sale of Ivor Pandur, Hull City moved quickly to sign former Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland. The 31‑year‑old joins on a two‑year contract with an optional additional twelve months. The deal aims to stabilise the squad ahead of the Premier League campaign.
Sporting director Jared Dublin left Hull City with immediate effect after less than two years in the role. His exit follows a breakdown in communication over personal contract talks.
Dublin initially joined the Tigers as head of recruitment in August 2024, succeeding Lee Darnbrough. He was promoted to sporting director shortly thereafter.
Sports editor Mike White said, "Sources have told me a breakdown in communication over personal contract talks between Dublin and the club has contributed to his departure." The comment highlights internal tensions.
Hull City issued a 47‑word statement thanking Dublin for his efforts, particularly his contribution to the club’s promotion to the Premier League. The club wished him well for the future.
The club avoided a potential points deduction by selling goalkeeper Ivor Pandur and midfielder Aidon Shehu hours before the deadline on Tuesday last week. Those sales were forced by the Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Profit and Sustainability Rules required clubs set to receive significant funds to balance their accounts before 30 June, prompting Hull City to offload players despite promotion earnings. The regulations left the Tigers with limited options.
Butland is expected to compete for the starting goalkeeper position as Hull City prepares for its Premier League season. The club will continue to monitor compliance with PSR while strengthening the squad.
