Zoff stresses autonomy for Maldini as Italy rebuilds
Former World Cup‑winning captain Dino Zoff publicly urged Italy’s new technical director Paolo Maldini to be given full freedom to act on his own convictions, emphasizing that such autonomy is essential for lasting change as the FIGC embarks on a new era of restructuring.
Paolo Maldini was confirmed as the new technical director of the FIGC, signing a four‑year contract that runs until the end of the 2030 World Cup. His role places him at the heart of Italy’s football restructuring.
Former Milan teammate Leonardo, a former Rossoneri and PSG director, will join Maldini as an advisor, bringing experience from both Serie A and Ligue 1. The duo will work closely with the FIGC hierarchy.
Giovanni Malago has recently been elected President of the FIGC, succeeding Gabriele Gravina. His appointment completes a leadership team that Zoff believes can steer Italy forward.
Italy turns to AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini to revive football
Italy have missed qualification for the last three FIFA World Cups, a stark reminder of the challenges facing the national side. The new technical set‑up aims to reverse that trend. In an interview with Il Resto del Carlino, Zoff said, “Maldini is a perfect appointment in terms of character, charisma and competence,” and added that the leader must be free from external interference. He also noted that he would not suggest a name for the future head coach.Italian federation appoints legend Paolo Maldini as technical director
