Transfers WOMEN

Why Arsenal needed Cerci: flexibility and goals in one signing

🇬🇧 By 4All Football Editorial ·

Arsenal have completed the free transfer signing of 26-year-old forward Selina Cerci from Bundesliga side TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. The move addresses a clear need for goals and attacking flexibility under head coach Renée Slegers, who has reshaped the squad’s frontline options.

Cerci arrives with a proven Bundesliga goalscoring record, having netted 34 times in 47 appearances for Hoffenheim. Her final two seasons in Germany yielded 16 goals each campaign, while she also provided nine assists last season. These numbers underscore her readiness to contribute immediately in the WSL.

The 26-year-old brings versatility to Arsenal’s front three, capable of playing across multiple attacking positions. This adaptability will allow Slegers greater freedom in substitutions and tactical rotation, reducing predictability compared to last season’s output.

At international level, Cerci has scored five goals in 20 appearances for Germany, reinforcing her credentials as a proven performer at the highest level. Her arrival follows a long-standing public support for Arsenal, including wearing the club’s colours as a fan.

“This is an opportunity to compete against and play alongside top players in one of the best leagues in the world,” Cerci said. “I’m looking forward to getting stuck in and walking out at Emirates Stadium in front of all our supporters.”

Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley described the signing as “an instinctive goalscorer with a proven record in the Bundesliga,” adding that she is “in a strong position to transition to English football and Arsenal.”

Slegers echoed the sentiment, stating: “She has impressive goalscoring numbers and brings good presence, physicality and forward intent. Combined with her strong work ethic, we feel these qualities make her a great addition to our squad.”

Cerci will wear the No 29 shirt at Arsenal, continuing her progression from a lifelong supporter to a first-team player. The club has not disclosed contract length or further financial details beyond confirming the free transfer.
