Why Ajax’s Sean Steur is heading to Newcastle for €27m
Ajax are set to lose 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur to Newcastle United in a deal reported to be worth €27 million including add-ons.
The Dutch club had been in advanced talks with Steur over a new contract, with former technical director Alex Kroes reaching a preliminary agreement earlier this year. The teenager, however, opted to wait for clarity on the sporting vision under new technical director Jordi Cruijff. Those discussions ultimately did not lead to an extension.
Multiple clubs attempted to break the deadlock in recent weeks but were deterred by Ajax’s valuation. Newcastle United succeeded where others failed, removing both club and player doubts over the weekend.
Steur joined Ajax’s youth academy a decade ago and made his senior breakthrough last season under interim manager Fred Grim. He featured 20 times in the Eredivisie, scoring once.
Newcastle’s offer includes a five-year contract at St James’ Park, with Steur expected to complete the move within days once medicals are passed. The agreement would see him commit to the Magpies until mid-2031.
The transfer marks a significant shift for a player once considered a cornerstone of Ajax’s future. His departure leaves a gap in the midfield that the Amsterdam side will need to fill promptly.
For Newcastle, securing Steur represents a bold investment in a young talent with Eredivisie experience. The Premier League side has moved quickly to secure a player tipped as a future Dutch international.
Steur’s exit follows a turbulent period at Ajax, where contract talks stalled despite earlier progress. The club’s high asking price had deterred other suitors, but Newcastle’s willingness to meet it cleared the final hurdle.
The 18-year-old’s move to England comes just weeks after fellow Ajax academy graduate Rai Vloet joined a new club following his release from prison.
