Rocco Shein European test as Portsmouth Championship hopes rise

🇬🇧 By 4All Football Editorial ·

On Tuesday, Portsmouth secured the services of 23‑year‑old Estonian midfielder Rocco Shein, signing him from Norwegian club Fredrikstad. The transfer brings a rare Estonian presence to the English game and will be his first domestic league experience in the Championship.

Shein’s performances for Fredrikstad earned the attention of the south‑coast club, prompting Pompey to act on Tuesday. He featured in both legs of Fredrikstad’s Europa Conference League play‑off against Premier League side Crystal Palace, gaining valuable European exposure.

Journalist Martin Bjerke said the level is obviously a bit above but Shein proved against Crystal Palace that he can play at a high level. He added that the midfielder is in really good physical shape, ready for English football.

Bjerke also noted that Shein won all the pre‑season testing, runs the most for Fredrikstad in a match, and therefore should adapt well to the league. The comments highlight his work‑rate and stamina as key assets for the Championship.

The new signing arrives untested in English football and will need to adapt quickly to the pace and physicality of the Championship, a professional English league. He hails from Estonia and spent the previous season in Norway’s football system, giving him exposure to a different style of play.

Portsmouth gain a midfielder with European experience and strong physical attributes, potentially strengthening their push for promotion. The addition of Shein adds depth to the squad as the club chases its Championship ambitions.

For Shein, the move offers his first English domestic league experience and a platform to test his adaptability in a higher‑profile competition. Success in the Championship could raise his profile beyond Estonia and Norway.
