Real Madrid sticks to rule, offers Courtois one‑year extension
Thibaut Courtois will extend his contract with Real Madrid by one season, binding him to the Spanish club until mid‑2028. His current deal runs to mid‑2027, so the new agreement adds a single year.
Real Madrid still regards the 115‑cap Rode Duivel as the final piece for the coming seasons. In Spain everyone acknowledges that Courtois remains one of the best, perhaps the best, goalkeepers in the world.
President Florentino Perez has a standing rule that players over thirty are not offered multi‑year contracts. Consequently, the club can only provide Courtois with a one‑year renewal.
Courtois said, "I have not heard from Real Madrid, but the intentions of both parties are clear. Moreover Real Madrid does not give multi‑year contracts to players over thirty." His comment underlines the club’s policy.
Spaanse media reported that Real Madrid told Courtois' entourage they want to sit down after his vacation following the WK in the Verenigde Staten, Canada and Mexico. The meeting will be brief and the outcome is already known.
The goalkeeper’s last contract extension at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu was signed last summer. The only recent exception to the rule was Cristiano Ronaldo, who at 31 signed a three‑season deal in 2016.
The new contract is offered under the same conditions as his current agreement, meaning Courtois will not lose any salary. He will therefore continue to earn the same terms for the additional year.
Courtois remains Real Madrid’s first‑choice goalkeeper for another season, while the club upholds its over‑30 policy and avoids setting a new precedent. De club reiterated its stance on contract length for veteran players.
