Real Madrid eliminates Hincapie from centre-back pursuit

🇪🇸

Real Madrid have ruled out signing Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapie this summer, journalist Mario Cortegana reported, noting the club already secured Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer from Liverpool and continues to hunt for defensive reinforcements ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Speculation intensified after suggestions that Jose Mourinho valued Hincapie's profile, with enquiries were made because the player matches many of Real Madrid’s desired defensive traits.

Hincapie’s versatility – able to operate as a centre-back and left-back and being left‑footed – was highlighted as a key attraction for Mourinho, who reportedly prizes flexibility in his back line for long‑term planning.

Cortegana clarified that the potential transfer is not under consideration, confirming that Hincapie is no longer on Real Madrid’s shortlist.

Arsenal’s recent permanent signing of Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen further complicates any move; the Premier League champions activated a mandatory purchase option and paid €50 million, with the overall package reportedly exceeding that amount.

Although not always a guaranteed starter under Mikel Arteta, Hincapie featured regularly at both centre‑back and left‑back during Arsenal’s title‑winning campaign, showcasing the adaptability that had attracted admiration from clubs across Europe.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, have already added Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer from Liverpool and remain active in the market for defensive reinforcements ahead of the 2026/27 season.
