Rangers face £8‑10m dilemma as Lazio, Bologna and Frankfurt circle Barron

🇬🇧 By 4All Football Editorial ·

Connor Barron, the 23‑year‑old Scotland international, is on the transfer radar of Lazio, Bologna and Eintracht Frankfurt, with a price tag reported between £8 million and £10 million. Transfer insider Ekrem Konur disclosed over the weekend that Lazio have placed the midfielder firmly on their summer wishlist, sparking intense interest.

Bologna and Frankfurt are also monitoring Barron closely, adding to the competition for his signature. The clubs see the fee as modest, describing the sum as "pocket change" compared with their budgets, which raises the stakes for Rangers' board.

Rangers secured Barron on a free transfer from Aberdeen in July 2024 and he remains under contract until 2028, giving the club two years of leverage in any negotiations. The Scottish Premiership side now faces a genuine battle to retain him through the summer window.

In the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership, Barron made 27 league appearances, starting 16 and coming off the bench in 11, providing two assists without scoring. His average FotMob rating was 6.94, highlighted by a 9.27 rating in the 2‑0 win over Aberdeen in January, and he accumulated five yellow cards.

Midfield competition at Ibrox has intensified, with new defensive midfielders arriving and José Cifuentes still in the squad, limiting Barron's chances of regular first‑team minutes. Former Pittodrie manager Derek McInnes has praised him, but sentiment alone does not win titles.

A potential swap involving Lewis Ferguson has been rumored, with Bologna’s involvement adding a twist. Bringing Ferguson to Govan, funded by Barron's sale, would give Rangers a significant upgrade where they need it most.

If Lazio or Frankfurt present an £8‑10 million offer, the economics favour Rangers selling the player rather than retaining a squad member whose market value could decline on the bench. The club must weigh immediate cash against future squad depth.

Bringing a high‑profile midfielder to the Ibrox Club could reshape the squad, but the decision hinges on whether the board chooses to take the money and reinvest wisely, a choice that will define the club’s rebuilding strategy.
