Pechvogel aims to win back Netherlands spot, Ervan convinced

🇳🇱 By 4All Football Editorial ·

Mexx Meerdink, the 22‑year‑old striker who endured a difficult season at AZ, says he is determined to win back a place in the Netherlands squad and believes it can happen. He describes himself as a "Pechvogel" after missing a potential debut due to a long‑lasting injury.

Today at 10:00, Meerdink confirmed that the past year at AZ has been challenging, with limited playing time and a serious groin injury that sidelined him for more than four months. The injury was sustained during his first training session with the Netherlands, forcing him to sit out 22 matches.

Because of the injury, Meerdink also missed the chance to make his debut for the Dutch national team, a setback he refers to as a lost opportunity for the World Cup. He emphasizes that the injury not only halted his club appearances but also his international ambitions.

Toen Meerdink regained fitness, he found himself primarily used as a substitute in Alkmaar, limiting his minutes on the pitch. This reduced role contrasted sharply with his expectations before the injury.

Meerdink discussed the previous season during the Tour of the Eredivisie organized by VoetbalPrimeur. He explained that after the injury he logged very few minutes, so he did not count on reaching the World Cup with the Netherlands.

He added, "I will do everything to get the Netherlands again. Am I convinced it can happen? If I get into my rhythm and start playing again, yes," affirming his confidence in returning to the national team.

Fans can follow the latest Tour of the Eredivisie at AZ with Leeroy Echteld and Mexx Meerdink, where further insights into his recovery and ambitions are shared.
