Nice’s signing under new director: Abergel returns with Pantaloni

🇫🇷
OGC Nice have secured midfielder Laurent Abergel on a free transfer, signing him to a three‑year contract after his contract with FC Lorient was terminated by mutual consent earlier this week. The 33‑year‑old Frenchman will join the Ligue 1 side at the Allianz Riviera and reunite with former Lorient boss Olivier Pantaloni, now in charge at Nice. Abergel captained FC Lorient, known as Les Merlus, last season under manager Olivier Pantaloni. Pantaloni, who departed Lorient after his two‑year contract expired, took over at Nice, replacing Claude Puel. Nice finished the previous campaign narrowly flirting with relegation, prompting a need for experienced midfield depth. The midfielder becomes the first signing of sporting director Roger Ricort, who succeeded Florian Maurice after the latter left at season’s end. Abergel’s contract with Lorient was terminated by mutual consent earlier this week, allowing him to move on a free transfer. His arrival at Nice was confirmed on Thursday, sealing a three‑year deal with the club. “I am immensely proud to have joined Nice,” Abergel said, describing the club as historic and ambitious. He added that from the first talks he felt real confidence and a common vision with the new project. The move gives Abergel a stable three‑year platform to rebuild his career after leaving Lorient. For Nice, the signing provides immediate familiarity with Pantaloni’s tactics and marks Ricort’s inaugural recruitment, signalling intent to strengthen the squad.
