World Cup

Neymar bows out as Brazil's World Cup hopes crumble

Brazil's 2‑1 loss to Norway in the round of 16 eliminated the Selecao from the 2026 FIFA World Cup and sparked intense scrutiny of the squad's performance. Bruno Guimaraes missed a penalty and a clear chance early on, while Endrick squandered another good opportunity. Erling Braut Haaland, the Manchester City striker, scored both goals for Norway, completing a brace and raising his World Cup tally to seven. His second strike came after repeatedly challenging Brazil defender Gabriel Magalhaes. In the final minutes Brazil earned a penalty, which Neymar converted, but the goal proved insufficient to overturn the deficit. Neymar was visibly inconsolable after the final whistle, realizing his World Cup dream had ended. Following the match, Neymar announced his retirement from international football, stating, “I tried. I tried. It started here at Met Life Stadium, and I finished here. It is now over.” The announcement was relayed via journalist Fabrizio Romano. Neymar is a former Barcelona and Paris Saint‑Germain forward, having spent the bulk of his club career at those two European giants. His departure marks the end of an era for Brazil’s attacking talent. He leaves with 80 goals and 59 assists in 130 appearances, a record that places him among Brazil’s all‑time greats. His honours include a Confederations Cup win, a Copa America final appearance in 2021, and an Olympic gold medal with the Under‑23 side. Manager Carlo Ancelotti’s tactical choices, such as omitting Joao Pedro from the squad and allowing Guimaraes to take the crucial spot‑kick, have been widely criticised. The Selecao now faces a rebuilding phase under Ancelotti as they look ahead to future competitions without their talismanic forward.
