NEC eyes Kaapverdië World Cup‑held Monteiro to revive midfield creativity

🇳🇱 By 4All Football Editorial ·

NEC are on the verge of adding 32‑year‑old Kaapverdië WK‑held Jamiro Monteiro to their squad, securing him on a free transfer after his summer move from PEC Zwolle. The Nijmegense club hopes the experienced Kaapverdische playmaker will fill a creative void in midfield as the Eredivisie‑seizoen progresses.

NEC, a Nijmegense side, identified a creative gap in their midfield that they aim to close with Monteiro’s arrival. The club believes the veteran’s vision can restore balance as the campaign unfolds.

Because Monteiro arrived as a free agent, the Gelderse outfit sees a cost‑effective reinforcement for De Goffert. After finishing third in the previous Eredivisie‑seizoen, NEC view him as a potential catalyst for another strong push.

According to transfer journalist Mounir Boualin, discussions between NEC and Monteiro are in an advanced stage and proceeding in good harmony. Nevertheless, a contract has not yet been signed.

Monteiro showcased his ability at the WK, starting for Kaapverdië in group games against Spanje (0‑0), Uruguay (2‑2) and Saoedi‑Arabië (0‑0). He also featured in the round of 16 loss to Argentinië (2‑3 after extra time).

If the deal is completed before the summer transfer window closes, NEC expect Monteiro to help restore equilibrium in midfield and boost their title ambitions. For the 32‑year‑old, the move offers a platform to apply his World Cup experience in the Dutch Eredivisie.
