Nagelsmann’s Germany exit sparks fury after Paraguay upset
The four-time world champions were eliminated from the tournament after a 1-1 draw against Paraguay ended in a penalty shoot-out defeat. The result means Germany are out in the round of 16, marking one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.
Julian Nagelsmann, the German national team coach, admitted his side took too long to establish their wing play during the match. Speaking at the post-match press conference, he said: "We simply took too long to get our flank play going."
Nagelsmann described Germany’s approach as increasingly forced as the game progressed, creating more chances inside the 16-yard box but lacking the cutting edge to convert them. "As the game went on, we tried to force things more and created more situations inside the six-yard box," he explained. "We had control, but we lacked the final punch."

The coach’s future with the national team remains uncertain, with calls growing for his dismissal. Nagelsmann, however, has no intention of stepping down. "I’m not someone who runs away. That’s out of the question," he insisted. "I want to continue and am ready if that’s what is wanted. If not, then they should say so." Germany thought they had scored a 2-1 lead in extra time, but the goal was disallowed, sparking a heated debate over the referee’s decision. Nagelsmann was equally critical, calling it a "downright scandal" during a ZDF interview.Penalty drama reshapes World Cup path for Paraguay and Germany
"It’s not a foul in the remotest sense," he said. "What a joke. But ultimately, you also have to say that it simply wasn’t enough." Despite the painful exit, Nagelsmann remains determined to fight for his position. Whether the German Football Association will continue to back him remains to be seen in the coming days. With a disappointing World Cup campaign, Germany faces another pivotal decision while the pressure on the coach intensifies.
