Motherwell's boost: signing left‑footed centre‑back Martin Moormann

🇬🇧

Motherwell have secured Austrian centre‑back Martin Moormann on a two‑year contract, with an option for a third year, after the 25‑year‑old departed relegated Blau‑Weiß Linz. The signing makes him the first acquisition of new manager Alfred Johansson as the Scottish Premiership side looks to reinforce its defence.

Johansson identified a specific gap in the squad that Moormann is intended to fill, describing him as the left‑footed centre‑back the club needs. The defender’s profile matches the manager’s tactical plan to add stability at the heart of the back line.

"His fast, physical presence allows him to dominate in the area and help prevent the opposition from creating chances," Johansson wrote on the club website. "He is also technically talented on the ball and comfortable playing out in difficult situations," the manager added, noting Moormann’s experience despite his age.

Martin Moormann joined Rapid Vienna from St Pölten’s academy in 2018, later making 67 first‑team appearances for the Austrian champions. He transferred to Blau‑Weiß Linz two years ago, where he continued his development in the country’s Bundesliga.

During his first season at Blau‑Weiß Linz, the Austria youth‑capped defender helped the club achieve a top‑half finish for the first time in its history. The side then finished bottom of the 12‑team top flight, with Moormann making 23 appearances, scoring three goals, and being left on the bench for eight of the final nine games.

For Motherwell, Moormann brings a blend of physicality, technical ability and left‑footed defensive coverage that could strengthen their league campaign. Moormann expressed excitement about the move, eager to join a group of players who achieved so much last season and to prove his worth in Scottish football.
