Monaco's strategic push for youth: why Aymen Assab matters
AS Monaco have moved to fill a midfield void left by recent departures by signing 17‑year‑old France U18 international Aymen Assab on a free transfer, after the youngster turned down a first professional contract at Paris Saint‑Germain. The 17‑year‑old midfielder joins Monaco's squad as the club prepares for the new season under manager Filipe Luis.
Assab never featured for Paris Saint‑Germain's senior side, but his reputation stems from standout performances at youth level. He impressed in the UEFA Youth League last season and helped his side capture both the French U19 league title and the Coupe Gambardella.
Monaco announced the free transfer on Monday, confirming that the midfielder would initially train with the first team. The club's new manager Filipe Luis, also unveiled on Monday, will monitor Assab's progress. Assab is set to take part in his first training session with the professionals on Wednesday.
The length of the France U18 international’s contract with Monaco has not been disclosed. As a 17‑year‑old, Assab joins a squad that is reshaping its midfield under Luis's guidance.
Integrating directly into first‑team training offers Assab a fast track to senior football, but competition for midfield places remains stiff. His development will hinge on how quickly he adapts to the senior environment and the tactical demands of Luis.
The move was reported by Luke Entwistle.
