Midfield overhaul stalls: Manchester United face Ederson setback

🇬🇧 By 4All Football Editorial ·

Manchester United have identified a clear need to replace departing midfield talisman Casemiro and to cover Manuel Ugarte’s long‑term injury, prompting a push for Atalanta’s Ederson. The club publicly denied they have walked away from the 27‑year‑old’s transfer, citing journalist Lyall Thomas.

Fabrizio Romano recently claimed United would not complete the deal after agreeing terms with the Serie A side. The transfer journalist’s assertion was quickly refuted by the Red Devils.

The Premier League giants are said to have changed their mind after Ederson’s recent medical tests flagged an issue. United maintain that the process remains ongoing and no final decision has been taken.

Strengthening the midfield has been a priority after Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s injury on World Cup duty with Uruguay. The club’s recruitment drive reflects the void left in the centre of the pitch.

United backed out of discussions for Elliot Anderson because Nottingham Forest’s asking price was deemed too high. The missed target adds to a series of setbacks in the summer window.

They were then beaten to the signing of Mateus Fernandes by Tottenham Hotspur after the London club met West Ham’s £85 million valuation. The loss highlights the competitive market for midfield talent.

Ederson looked destined to join Old Trafford after United agreed a deal with Atalanta, but the transfer now appears unlikely. The medical concern remains the main obstacle.

The summer transfer window officially opened in June, yet United have yet to complete their first signing. The Red Devils are expected to announce Andrey Santos, who has completed his medical following a £50m agreement with Chelsea.
