Míchel seeks an intelligent control midfielder: eleven Ajax targets

🇳🇱 By 4All Football Editorial ·

Today at 14:30 the Amsterdammers announced that Ajax hope to solve a long‑standing headache this summer, after the departure of Jordan Henderson they have been hunting a suitable control midfielder. The search enjoys absolute priority for Jordi Cruijff and Míchel, who described the ideal player as intelligent, able to organise the team and exploit space before receiving the ball.

The Spanish coach lifted a small veil on the profile, telling that “an intelligent player, that is the most important thing”. He added that the player must understand time and space instantly, whether playing individually or with passes. Edon Álvarez, the Mexican former Ajax man now heading to FC Köln, does not fit that description, which may explain his move.

Christian Nørgaard (Arsenal)Vanuit England has been linked repeatedly; the 32‑year‑old Danish midfielder would add leadership to the Amsterdamse midfield, and his tactical strength makes him a balance keeper. At Arsenal he struggled for minutes behind Martin Zubimendi, but he was valued at Brentford. Pepelu (Valencia)Pepelu, a 27‑year‑old Spaniard, matches the profile with defensive solidity and game‑reading, while Antonio Blanco (Deportivo Aláves)De, a 25‑year‑old La Liga talent, leads Alavés and could leave for a modest ten‑million fee. Ivan Martín, linked to Girona)Sinds, plays in Catalonië for Girona and offers passing and insight, though his price remains undisclosed. Érik Lira of Cruz Azul)Érik impressed at the WK for Mexico, yet his availability is uncertain. Arthur Vermeeren of RB Leipzig, a Belgian who emerged under Mark Bommel at Royal Antwerp, still shows promise at 21. Galarza of CA Talleres)Niet, a Paraguayan‑Argentinian forward, impressed at KRC Genk and could return to Europe. Morita, a free‑agent Japanese midfielder, was blocked by Sporting Portugal, while Samu Costa of Real Mallorca)Dat, a Portuguese who shone in the Balearen, is another option.

Hidemasa Morita, now club‑free, could bring tactical insight, while Axel Witsel, the former Belgian “Rode Duivel”, remains a veteran presence despite his age. Matias Siltanen of Djurgårdens IF)Aan, a 19‑year‑old Finn, has attracted interest from Manchester City, Juventus and Toulouse, showing the breadth of Ajax’s scouting net.

Ajax hopes that by reviewing these eleven candidates they can finally close the control‑midfielder gap before the new season, turning a summer headache into a strategic advantage for the club.
