Mathis Servais leaves Belgium for Millwall in £5m transfer

🇧🇪
Mathis Servais has left KV Mechelen to join Millwall on a long-term contract. The 21-year-old Belgian midfielder signs for an estimated fee of €6 million, though the English club has not confirmed the exact amount. Servais completes a move to England after impressing in Belgium’s top flight last season. He featured in 34 matches for Mechelen across all competitions, contributing six goal contributions—two goals and four assists. The Namur native moves to Millwall, who finished third in the EFL Championship last term. His arrival follows a year of close monitoring by the London club, who identified him as a priority target upon his arrival at Mechelen. In his first remarks under his new colours, Servais told Millwall’s official channels: “I hope the supporters enjoy watching me on the pitch. I’m an attacking midfielder, someone with class, I think. A good left foot. So I hope they see good football from me. I know there are many games, so it will be a long season. But yes, we will need the supporters, of course, to make it an incredible season, and I can’t wait to see them.” Millwall’s sporting director Steve Gallen hailed Servais as a mature talent for his age. “We are absolutely delighted to bring Mathis to the club. He is young but plays with real maturity for his age. An international with Belgium’s U21s, he can play in several positions but we see him primarily as a central midfielder: athletic, powerful and capable of progressing the play.” Gallen added: “Mathis has been on our radar for a year, since he joined Mechelen in Belgium’s top flight. We’ve closely followed his development both at club level and with the Belgian U21s. As with any player arriving from abroad, it will take time to adapt to the team, the country and the culture. But his potential is very exciting and we are very happy to welcome him. Once again, we’d like to thank our president for his constant support for the team and the club.” Servais joined Millwall’s training ground at The Den this morning as his new chapter begins. The club now eyes a top-two finish in the Championship to secure promotion to the Premier League, having narrowly missed out last season. Transfermarkt estimates the transfer fee at €6 million, though Millwall has described the deal only as a “long-term contract for an undisclosed amount.”
