Manchester United turn sights to Uruguayan star Maxi Araújo

Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of Sporting CP winger Maxi Araújo, with a club representative present at Uruguay’s 2-2 World Cup draw with Cape Verde in Miami.

The 26-year-old has been tracked by United across the 2025/26 season, with Record reporting that the club are “tightening their grip” on the Uruguayan. Two goals and one assist in his first two World Cup appearances under Marcelo Bielsa have elevated Araújo’s profile from existing interest to a more serious pursuit.

Araújo’s versatility is a key factor for United, who are seeking a left-sided option capable of playing at left-back or further forward. The club’s representative left Miami with a stronger impression of the player, reinforcing the club’s long-term scouting over short-term tournament hype.

After the Cape Verde match, Araújo addressed his future, stating: “I am very happy at Sporting, but you never know what will happen.” The comment leaves the door ajar for a potential move, despite his current club stance.

Sporting CP are not passive in this transfer race. Record report that once Uruguay’s World Cup campaign ends, the club will meet Araújo’s representatives to discuss his future. If no agreement is reached, Sporting are prepared to offer him a significant pay rise, currently earning between €700,000 and €800,000 net per year.

His release clause stands at €80m (£68m), though Sporting are expected to begin negotiations closer to €60m (£51m). Chelsea and Tottenham are also credited with interest, while Atlético Madrid have reportedly cooled after learning Sporting’s demands.

For Manchester United, Araújo fits a defined need. The left side of defence has been a recurring issue, with United seeking tactical flexibility through a player who can operate in multiple positions.

Scouting is one thing; converting admiration into negotiation is another. Sporting know the market is forming, Araújo knows his stock is rising, and United, having sent eyes to Miami, now know the price of hesitation.

The next steps will be critical for all parties involved.
