Man Utd Finnish pre‑season trip hints at squad rotation

🇬🇧 By 4All Football Editorial ·

Manchester United travel to Finland on Friday afternoon to launch their pre‑season campaign against Championship side Wrexham in Helsinki on Saturday, with a 16:00 BST kick‑off. The trip, highlighted by a [Getty Images] release, hints that manager Michael Carrick may rotate completely different XIs in each half.

The journey marks the club's first senior friendly of the summer and will test a mixed group of senior and youth players. It offers an early gauge of fitness and integration ahead of the new campaign.

United have kept the travelling party under wraps until just before departure, while a separate under‑21 and under‑18 group will be in Germany on Friday for a couple of games. Those fixtures are expected to provide clues about which youngsters Carrick might call upon in Helsinki.

Earlier this week the club posted a series of training pictures showing 25 players, including four goalkeepers, on the training pitches. The images give a visual snapshot of the squad composition before the trip.

Tyler Fletcher has returned to training after Scotland's World Cup campaign and Karl Darlow has joined United's goalkeeping ranks, raising the squad count to 27. Carrick appears set to use the enlarged roster to rotate personnel across the two halves of the friendly.

A major attraction is £48m midfielder Andrey Santos, who completed his move from Chelsea on 13 July and is expected to feature prominently. His arrival adds quality to the midfield options on display.

Among the younger players pictured were defender Harry Amass and midfielders Jacob Devaney, Dan Gore and Toby Collyer, plus striker Ethan Wheatley; each spent at least part of last season on loan away from Old Trafford. Their inclusion signals a pathway for loanees to re‑integrate.

Midfielder Jim Thwaites, defender Dan Armer and striker Chido Obi also appeared, having been part of the United side that lost the FA Youth Cup final to Manchester City in May. Their experience in a recent youth final may aid their senior transition.

Interestingly, 15‑year‑old JJ Gabriel was not shown, and his absence from Carrick for a week may indicate he is not yet ready for senior‑team exposure. The omission underscores the careful management of very young talent.

Defender Matthijs de Ligt and striker Benjamin Sesko were also missing from the training footage; de Ligt underwent back surgery in May after missing the second half of the season, while Sesko was substituted at half‑time against Liverpool on 3 May with what Carrick described as a "shin issue". Their injuries explain their current unavailability.
