Champions League hopes push Lens while Coventry ramps up Openda chase
RC Lens have launched a pursuit of 26‑year‑old Belgian international Lois Openda, while newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City have also entered the race for the striker. Both clubs see the move as pivotal, with Lens targeting a UEFA Champions League impact and Coventry fighting for Premier League survival.
Lens are preparing for a UEFA Champions League return and have identified a clear need for a proven striker to deliver on the European stage. The French club’s sporting project hinges on securing a forward who can perform in the Champions League.
Foot Mercato stresses that Lens view Lois Openda as the ideal candidate for the role. Lens finished just one point behind Paris Saint-Germain last season and earned a place at the Stade Bollaert for the UCL.
Openda’s recent spell in Turin proved underwhelming, as he featured in 37 games across all competitions for Juventus but managed to net only twice. The Juventus’ stint highlighted a sharp drop from his earlier output.
Before joining Juventus, the Belgian forward scored 41 goals in 93 appearances for RB Leipzig, demonstrating his ability at a high level. At Lens, Openda delivered 21 goals in 42 games, a tally that helped Les Sang et Or secure their European berth.
Lens sporting director Jean‑Louis Leca is actively pushing for Openda’s return, but the player’s salary presents a major obstacle. Juventus would need to shoulder at least part of the wage package for any agreement to materialise.
Coventry City, the newly promoted Premier League side, have also expressed interest, adding competition to the transfer market for the Belgium international. Their pursuit underscores the urgency for Lens to resolve the financial and contractual hurdles quickly.
The next steps hinge on whether Juventus agrees to a salary contribution and if Lens can outbid Coventry City. Luke Entwistle notes the situation remains fluid as clubs negotiate the terms.
