Leipzig target Burnley Maxime Estève to fill Championship‑level gap

🇬🇧 By 4All Football Editorial ·

RB Leipzig are hunting Burnley FC’s Maxime Estève to fill a Championship‑level gap left by departing centre‑back Castello Lukeba, with the 24‑year‑old French defender seen as the direct replacement. Leipzig have already convinced him to sign, and the €32 million fee reported by Fabrizio Romano reflects their ambition ahead of the new Bundesliga campaign.

The defender remains under contract with Burnley and the Clarets until 2030, with the €32 million fee—including bonuses—already agreed in principle. Negotiations are ongoing between the English and German representatives to finalise the exact terms.

Estève first arrived on loan from Montpellier HSC before completing a permanent transfer to Burnley in 2024. A French Under‑23 international, he quickly became a key figure for the Lancashire‑based side.

During the 2025‑26 campaign he started all 36 of his appearances, yet could not stop the club from slipping into the Championship. His consistent displays earned him recognition despite the team’s relegation.

RB Leipzig view the 24‑year‑old as the direct successor to Castello Lukeba, who is set to leave in the coming weeks. The move would give Estève Bundesliga action and European exposure, as the Germans qualified for the Champions League after finishing third in the league, securing a place in Europe.

Léo Aschi confirmed the details initially reported by Fabrizio Romano, noting the €32 million investment. The Germans see the signing as a statement of intent ahead of the upcoming season.

Finalisation of the contract remains pending, with talks between the clubs’ English and German sides still under way. Completion will see Estève join RBL before the new campaign begins.
