Kroos blames lack of authority for Germany’s World Cup exit
In the latest episode of the podcast Einfach mal Luppen, former Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos, joined by his brother Felix, ripped into the German national team after their World Cup elimination, declaring that Germany “ Right now, we do not have a single world-class player ,” and urging a rethink on talent development.
Kroos said, “ Right now, we do not have a single world-class player ,” and stressed that the absence of elite talent is a central problem for the squad.
He added, “The reality is that football has changed and we have remained trapped in the memory of what we once were. You do not win with the badge, you win with authority, and today we do not have that,” highlighting a loss of authority on the pitch.

Kroos pointed to a shortage of leaders in moments of maximum pressure, arguing that leadership cannot be imposed by decree; it appears when the heat is on and the team needs someone to cling to. He called on the youth ranks, stating, “We have stopped producing players with character; now they all seem cut from the same cloth, and we are missing that rebellious streak,” and warned that the development pipeline lacks the necessary character. While acknowledging that Germany possesses players with great potential, Kroos insisted that potential alone is insufficient to compete on the biggest stages. His blunt assessment has sparked a deep debate about the squad’s true potential and underscores the urgency of reviving character and authority in the next generation of German footballers.
