KNVB joins UEFA in condemning FIFA over Balogun red card reversal
The Netherlands’ football association has entered the debate over the overturned red card shown to United States striker Folarin Balogun at the World Cup. The KNVB stated it aligns with UEFA’s view that FIFA ‘crossed a red line’ by lifting the automatic suspension imposed on Balogun.
The Dutch FA confirmed its support for UEFA’s stance following FIFA’s decision to convert the straight red card into a conditional suspension. Balogun received the red card during the United States’ group-stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which would normally trigger at least a one-match ban.
That suspension would have kept the American out of the Round of 16 clash with Belgium. Instead, the conditional ruling means he is available for selection, a move that has drawn criticism from European football’s governing body.
FIFA chief defends decision after Trump intervenes in Balogun red card row
FIFA president Gianni Infantino and former US president Donald Trump discussed the red card in a call on Monday. The Swiss official told Trump that the FIFA disciplinary committee operates ‘independently’, according to the statement. The KNVB’s intervention adds weight to UEFA’s public rebuke of FIFA’s handling of the incident. The Dutch FA’s statement did not elaborate on additional steps it may take in response to the decision. Balogun, the United States’ top scorer at the tournament, has become the focal point of a broader debate about refereeing decisions and disciplinary consistency at the World Cup.
