KBVB challenges FIFA over Balogun eligibility amid procedural clash
The Belgian Football Association (KBVB) has released a second communiqué after FIFA annulled the suspension of striker Folarin Balogun, but the federation says it has yet to receive any official response from FIFA. The timing of the statement comes as Belgium prepares for its next international fixture, intensifying scrutiny over Balogun’s eligibility.
In its initial statement, the KBVB expressed surprise that Balogun remains eligible for the upcoming clash with the Red Devils despite receiving a red card in the round‑of‑16. The association referenced article 66.4 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which stipulates that a red card automatically triggers a suspension for the following match.
The new statement posted on the KBVB website the federation has lodged an appeal against FIFA’s decision concerning Balogun. It also notes that, although the deadline is approaching, the KBVB has not heard back from FIFA.
Belgium refuses to drop FIFA case over Balogun despite World Cup win
The KBVB wrote to FIFA requesting a copy of the decision, an explanation of the procedure followed, and clarification of its stance on the relevant regulations. FIFA replied that the correspondence was treated as an appeal, appointed an arbitrator, and gave the KBVB only a few hours to complete the appeal, without providing substantive information. According to FIFA’s own rules, an appeal can be considered admissible only after the appellant has received a reasoned decision. The KBVB argues that FIFA turned its legitimate information request into an appeal and then immediately deemed it inadmissible, refusing to supply the requested details. The federation also the presentation at the recent match‑coordination meeting was deliberately altered, with the segment on automatic player suspensions removed. With no decision or clarification from FIFA to date, the KBVB says it must formally contest Balogun’s eligibility for the forthcoming match. The KBVB stresses its serious concerns and reaffirms its commitment to defending the fundamental principles of ethics, fair competition and the overall interests of football. Belgium’s next game against the United States is scheduled for 02:00 on 7 July, and the eligibility dispute adds further uncertainty to the encounter.
