Iran's World Cup hopes crumble as other games seal their exit

Iran's 1-1 draw with Egypt at Seattle Stadium on Friday left Team Melli needing a win to reach the knockout stage, but subsequent results handed them elimination, confirming their World Cup fate rests on other teams. The match saw captain Mehdi Taremi miss a penalty and a late winner disallowed for off‑side. After the draw, Mehdi Taremi lay on the ground at Seattle Stadium, staring at the heavens, while Alireza Jahanbakhsh offered him comfort. Taremi later told the media there was “good energy” in the locker room and that the players were proud of their performance. Iran required a Ghana win over Croatia, but Ghana lost, delivering the opposite result. They also needed Uzbekistan to avoid defeat against the Democratic Republic of Congo, yet the African side came back from 1-0 down to win. A late hope appeared when Riyad Mahrez scored in stoppage time to put Algeria ahead 3-2 over Austria, a result Iran needed to go their way. Austria equalised moments later, sealing Iran’s elimination as the final whistle blew. A senior federation official had been scheduled to speak at the team’s training session on Saturday night, but the appearance was cancelled after DR Congo’s comeback. The training session itself was called off, ending Team Melli’s World Cup campaign. Earlier, before a 0-0 draw with Belgium, Mehdi Taremi had urged his teammates to “Run,” emphasizing a fearless approach. Iran’s preparation was hampered by a U.S. travel ban, visa denials for 11 staff members, and security delays that forced the team to train in Turkey and later in Mexico under armed guard. Outside the stadium, the squad faced protests from other Iranians and news of fresh bombings in their homeland just before their crucial match. Reflecting on the tournament, Iran left a note on the Seattle locker room board stating that “football is not just a competition for results. It is a test of character.” The team now looks ahead to rebuilding after a campaign marked by geopolitical challenges and on‑field disappointment.
