Ipswich's summer hunt: O'Neil eyes half a dozen signings

🇬🇧

Up to half a dozen new signings could arrive at Ipswich Town this summer, who fielded questions from listeners such as Xavier about Gary O'Neil's transfer plans. The manager aims to bolster a squad that recorded only 14 Premier League goals last season.

The first training camp is set for Spain at the end of July, with a second camp in Germany scheduled for mid‑August. O'Neil expects upwards of half a dozen arrivals by the time the squad departs for the German camp.

Having spent the previous six months in France, O'Neil has compiled a shortlist that includes players from Ligue 1. The French connection has sparked speculation about potential moves for a couple of Ligue 1‑based talents.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope and forward Callum Wilson have been the names most frequently linked with an Ipswich move. Both would bring substantial Premier League experience, a quality the club lacked two years ago.

Toulouse striker Emersonn is also reported to be on Town's radar after an impressive debut season in Ligue 1. Additionally, 22‑year‑old Julio Enciso, who worked with O'Neil at Strasbourg last season, could return if his World Cup form justifies the price.

O'Neil has indicated that at least four of the summer arrivals should be ready to start immediately. He stresses the need for a proven goalscorer to complement the existing attack.

Current captain Dara O'Shea and midfielder George Hirst each hold three of the team's 14 Premier League goals, highlighting the limited firepower available. The manager views this as a clear area for improvement.

Further parts of the Q&A will examine squad weaknesses, the role of homegrown talent, and Ipswich's survival prospects for the upcoming season.
