Homecoming for Cameron McGeehan: Barnsley banks on experience
Cameron McGeehan, the 31‑year‑old midfielder, has rejoined Barnsley from Northampton Town, signing a one‑year contract with an option for a second season after a campaign in which he netted seven goals in 39 appearances for the League One club in England.
During his initial three‑year spell at Oakwell beginning in 2017, McGeehan became a key figure in Daniel Stendel’s side that amassed a club‑record 91 points to secure promotion to the Championship in 2019. His contributions helped Barnsley achieve that historic points tally under Stendel’s leadership.
After departing Barnsley, McGeehan spent three seasons in Belgium with Oostende, followed by a year at Colchester United. He then returned to England for two seasons with Northampton Town, adding to his experience across leagues. He also earned a single cap for Northern Ireland during his career.
In his most recent season with Northampton, the midfielder featured in 39 matches and scored seven goals. The campaign was described as fine, highlighting his continued productivity.
McGeehan said, “It’s a great feeling to be back. As soon as you come in, it feels a little bit like home again.” He added that positive conversations with Stendel and the promise of using his experience made him delighted to return, emphasizing his hunger to succeed.
Stendel remarked, “He’s a player I know extremely well and someone who understands exactly how I want my teams to play.” The head coach’s confidence underscores the tactical fit McGeehan offers.
Barnsley secured McGeehan on a one‑year deal that includes a club‑option for an additional season. The arrangement gives the club flexibility to retain his services beyond the initial term.
The reunion links McGeehan’s unfinished business with Barnsley’s ambition to build on recent successes. His experience across Belgium and English leagues could prove pivotal as the club aims to strengthen its midfield for the upcoming campaign.
