Future Spits impresses FC Twente: Kijken at what’s best for Lucas
Vandaag, at 13:19, FC Twente announced that the 20‑year‑old Spits Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink has made a strong impression during pre‑season. The club says it must Kijken at what is best for the youngster as the season approaches.
Expectations around Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink are high at FC Twente, but the presence of established forwards Wout Weghorst and Sam Lammers means a loan spell elsewhere could be sensible for the next season. The club’s officials highlighted the need for the young striker to gain more flight hours.
"Lucas does very beautiful things. You see it in the running with the ball, in pressing," said Twente‑trainer John van den Brom to the regional newspaper. "He has been making an excellent development for a long time, only now it stands out because he gets more chances in the first team."
The twenty‑year‑old Vennegoor of Hesselink, son of former Oranje‑spits Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, was already goal‑rich in preparation, scoring against Aberdeen and, on Saturday, against PAOK. TC/Tubantia Twente view him as the ‘Spits of the future’ and have rewarded him with a contract running to mid‑2028.
"I think I have given my calling card in the preparation so far. I can do it. Compared to a year ago I am much further and stronger and that will continue for the next three or four years," Lucas said.
He added, "I just want to play at a good level and whether that is at Twente or elsewhere.. I am ready for the next step." He also said, "I am convinced I can handle it at FC Twente, but I have to Kijken at what is best for me now. And I still have a few good conversations to have about that."
Van den Brom appears less eager to send him on loan. "I will not send Lucas away. Certainly not. As a coach you want as many good players as possible, especially because we hope to play three times a week soon," he explained.
The Twentse attack now has a promising young Spits, but the final decision on his immediate future remains open as the club balances squad depth with his development.
