From Manchester City to Belgian minnows: the next step for Sverre Nypan

🇧🇪 By 4All Football Editorial ·

The rain-lashed car park of Lommel SK’s stadium is usually quiet at this hour, but this morning it buzzes with the hum of expectation. A new name has been added to the roster: Sverre Nypan, the nineteen-year-old attacking midfielder, steps off the team bus with a City Football Group crest on his tracksuit.

Lommel SK now boasts a player bought for fifteen million euros last year by Manchester City from Rosenborg. The nineteen-year-old attacking midfielder arrives on loan from the English club, where he spent last season training with the first team before a brief spell at Middlesbrough in the Championship.

Nypan made his professional debut for Rosenborg at fifteen, becoming the youngest ever starter in a Norwegian top-flight match. His rapid rise drew interest from Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, yet he chose Manchester City. In Norway he is already compared to Martin Ødegaard.

City paid over fifteen million euros for Nypan last year, securing him from Rosenborg. By fifteen he had already broken Rosenborg’s record as their youngest-ever starter in a league game. His progress prompted approaches from Europe’s elite, but Manchester City prevailed.

Last season he trained with Manchester City’s senior squad before being sent on loan to Middlesbrough in England’s second tier. He made twenty official appearances for Middlesbrough, with only three starts. In February City recalled him early.

Belgium now offers Nypan a new chapter. The temporary move to Lommel SK is facilitated by the City Football Group, of which the Belgian club is part. In Limburg he will line up alongside Ralf Seuntjens.

Lommel SK open their season on 8 August against STVV in a derby that will test Nypan’s readiness for Belgian football’s physical demands.

The Norwegian’s loan spell is more than a development step; it is a statement of intent from City Football Group to integrate young talent into their network of clubs. For Lommel SK, the arrival of a player valued at fifteen million euros signals ambition beyond their usual horizons.

Nypan’s journey from Rosenborg’s academy to Manchester City’s global structure reflects a modern pathway for teenage prospects. The Belgian experiment could shape his next career move, whether back to England or on to another City Football Group club.

At nineteen, Nypan carries expectations shaped by early records and elite comparisons. Belgium’s second division awaits his response.
