Fenerbahce’s $44.5m gamble on former England striker Mason Greenwood

By 4All Football Editorial ·

Fenerbahce have paid $44.5 million to Marseille for former England forward Mason Greenwood, signing the 24‑year‑old on a four‑year deal that runs until 2028, a move confirmed late Tuesday from Istanbul. The transfer marks his third club in as many years after leaving Manchester United.

The Istanbul club will settle the fee directly with Marseille and has secured Greenwood’s services until 2028, confirming the four‑year contract announced from ISTANBUL. This agreement follows a statement released late Tuesday confirming the details of the transfer.

In a video message posted by his new club, Greenwood said, “It was a no‑brainer when they (were) interested in me. It’s the biggest club in Turkey and I can’t wait to get started.” The quote underscores why Fenerbahce pursued him despite reported interest from Atletico Madrid.

Fenerbahce, the Turkish giants who have not lifted the Turkish league since 2014, view Greenwood’s 21‑goal haul in the 2024‑25 Ligue 1 season – joint‑best with Ousmane Dembélé – as a vital boost to their attacking options. The club sees the former England striker as a key piece in ending their title drought.

The former Manchester United prospect spent two seasons at Marseille after a loan spell in Spain with Getafe, following his banishment from United where he had been a top prospect before a 2022 suspension. His move to Turkey marks a fresh chapter after his time in French football.

Manchester United suspended Greenwood in 2022 after allegations of assault; he faced charges of attempted rape and coercive behaviour before the case was dropped, ending his tenure at Old Trafford. The legal saga concluded without conviction, allowing him to resume his career abroad.

Greenwood’s international résumé includes a single England cap in 2020, though both then‑coach Gareth Southgate and current coach Thomas Tuchel have said he was not in their plans. He remains eligible for Jamaica, but FIFA has not processed any switch request.

As runner‑up last season, Fenerbahce begins its Champions League campaign next week in the second qualifying round, hosting Gornik Zabrze in the first leg, hoping Greenwood’s goals can help end their title drought. The Turkish side aims to combine domestic success with progress in Europe.

The move gives Greenwood a fresh start at the biggest club in Turkey and a chance to feature in European competition, while Fenerbahce adds a proven scorer to their squad in pursuit of domestic glory.
