World Cup

England secure knockout spot, eye Panama showdown for group crown

🇬🇧
England have locked in a knockout‑stage berth at the 2026 World Cup ahead of their final group match against Panama on Saturday. The Three Lions sit atop Group L with four points, a total that secures at least one of the eight third‑place qualification places. England sit top of Group L on four points, enough to guarantee a third‑place slot. Their qualification depended on the third‑place team in four of the twelve groups finishing on three points or fewer. The scenario materialised after Uruguay were eliminated following a 1‑0 defeat to Spain. Uruguay’s exit opened the path for England’s third‑place qualification. England entered the tournament as favourites after a historic qualifying run of eight wins from eight matches without conceding a goal. The unbeaten record set high expectations for the squad. Thomas Tuchel’s side opened the World Cup with a 4‑2 victory over Croatia at the AT&T Stadium, highlighted by a Harry Kane brace and goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford. The win demonstrated England’s attacking potency. In the second group match on Tuesday, Ghana held England to a goalless draw, frustrating the English attack. England could not breach Ghana’s low block and settled for a point. Qualification for the round of 32 is now assured, but England still require a win over Panama to finish top of Group L. Panama are already out of the tournament and have only pride to play for against England.
