Coquelin’s return to Laval at 35: the boyhood club’s final gift

🇫🇷 By 4All Football Editorial ·

Francis Coquelin has signed a one-year deal with Stade Lavallois, with an option for a further season, returning to the club where his career began. The 35-year-old midfielder left Laval’s academy for Arsenal in 2008 as a teenager and never made a first-team appearance for his boyhood club before now. He will now have the chance to play senior football in Ligue 2 at the Stade Francis Le Basser, 18 years after departing for London.

Born in Laval, Coquelin progressed through Stade Lavallois’s youth system before Arsenal signed him in 2008. After leaving Laval, he never featured for their senior side, but his return marks the final chapter of a career that started in Mayenne. The move follows his spell at FC Nantes, where he spent the past 18 months as a free agent.

Coquelin’s return to Ligue 2 will be his first senior appearance at the Stade Francis Le Basser. His career has spanned England, Spain, and France, including 160 appearances for Arsenal between 2008 and 2018. He also featured on loan at Lorient, Freiburg, and Charlton Athletic during his time in England.

In Spain, Coquelin won the Spanish Cup with Valencia in 2019 and the Europa League with Villarreal in 2021, adding to the two FA Cups he claimed with Arsenal. His journey reflects a career built across multiple leagues, with Laval now offering the chance to conclude it where it all began.

The midfielder remains a respected figure among Arsenal supporters, remembered for his resilience and contributions during his decade in north London. His return to Stade Lavallois completes a full-circle moment, 18 years after leaving as a teenager to forge his path abroad.
