Cagliari banks on experience: Harry Winks signs two‑year deal

🇬🇧 By 4All Football Editorial ·

Harry Winks has completed a two‑year move to Italian side Cagliari, a deal that follows his £10 million arrival at Leicester City from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023, according to [Getty Images]. The 30‑year‑old England midfielder, capped ten times, made 36 appearances for the Foxes last season and is set to return to Serie A.

The transfer sees Winks leave Leicester for Cagliari for an undisclosed fee, signing a two‑year contract that marks his comeback to Italy after a loan spell at Sampdoria. His departure ends a season in which he featured 36 times for the Foxes, highlighting the midfield void his exit creates.

Leicester now face the task of filling that void; Winks was one of the club’s top earners and had repeatedly fallen out of favour, leaving the hierarchy to replace a regular starter from both Premier League and Championship campaigns. He was omitted from the side late in the 2024‑25 campaign by then boss Ruud van Nistelrooy and again by Marti Cifuentes after the club dropped into the Championship.

Winks later regained his place under Cifuentes' replacement, Gary Rowett, but a heated argument with a supporter on the team bus after a defeat at Portsmouth in April made him a focus of derision. Supporters regularly booed him, and his final appearances were met with chants of disapproval as the season culminated in relegation to League One.

In total, Winks featured 109 times for the Foxes in all competitions after arriving for about £10 million from Tottenham Hotspur, and he played a leading role in Leicester's promotion as Championship title winners under boss Enzo Maresca in his first season with the East Midlands club. That same season saw the one‑time Italian champions and European Cup finalists, Sampdoria, relegated.

Winks' move to Cagliari sees him return to Serie A, having previously played for Sampdoria on loan in 2022‑23 when the club were relegated. The midfielder now embarks on a new chapter in Italian football, hoping to revive his career after a turbulent spell in England.
