Burnley target defensive stability with Irish full‑back Kiera Sena signing

🇬🇧 By 4All Football Editorial ·

Burnley have moved to fill a defensive gap by signing 19‑year‑old Irish full‑back Kiera Sena on a free transfer, sealing a two‑year contract with a long‑term option as announced on the club’s website earlier today. The defender arrives at Turf Moor after leaving Southampton this summer, bolstering the back line as Burnley chase promotion to the Women’s Super League.

The acquisition directly addresses the defensive gap Burnley identified, as the club aims to push into the Women’s Super League and strengthen the back line with a specialist full‑back.

Sena began her senior career with Cork City in the SSE Airtricity League Women’s Premier Division, where she amassed more than 50 appearances in Ireland’s top‑tier competition.

She moved to Southampton in the Barclays WSL2 last summer, featuring in two matches and creating the winning goal in a 2‑1 victory over Ipswich Town in March.

Internationally, Sena has represented the Republic of Ireland up to the Under‑19 level, adding valuable youth experience to Burnley’s squad.

“It feels very good. I’m excited to be here and I’m looking forward to getting going,” Sena said, adding that Southampton was a massive experience but she is eager for a fresh start with Burnley’s ambitions.

The free transfer was confirmed by the Clarettes on the club’s website earlier today, which also outlined the two‑year deal and the optional long‑term extension.

Sena will join training immediately as Burnley continue their campaign to secure promotion, with her defensive abilities expected to bolster the side’s back line.

The move offers her a fresh start after a Southampton spell that she said did not go as planned.
