Barcelona's fury at Koeman over De Jong's mismanaged World Cup injury

The seriousness of the situation only became apparent on Monday, when De Jong unexpectedly reported to the Ciutat Esportiva ahead of schedule, cutting short a holiday that had been authorised until July 20.

Before any medical scans, De Jong met with Hansi Flick to explain the pain he felt, a meeting that highlighted the urgency felt by both player and club.

Initial assessments by Barcelona’s medical team revealed a severely swollen and unstable knee, raising concerns that ligament damage may be involved; however, internal bleeding has prevented a definitive MRI scan, delaying a final diagnosis until the swelling subsides.

Within the club, anger is directed at Ronald Koeman and the Netherlands’ national team because Barcelona were aware that De Jong had received pain‑killing injections before the World Cup matches against Tunisia and Morocco, yet claim they were never informed that his condition had deteriorated.

The Blaugrana fear that the extra workload in the extra‑time clash with Morocco dramatically worsened the damage, and surgery now remains a distinct possibility.

Barcelona’s frustration also extends to the Netherlands’ medical department and, to some extent, De Jong himself, with officials insisting that long‑term health should have taken priority over short‑term performance.

The tension dates back to the end of the 2023‑24 season, when Koeman publicly criticised Barcelona’s handling of De Jong’s earlier injury that ruled the Dutch international out of the European Championship, and the club still awaits definitive results from further tests.
