Barcelona backs injured Uruguayan defender with loan extension
Barcelona have extended the loan of 20‑year‑old Uruguayan defender Patricio Pacifico until the end of the 2026‑27 season, despite his serious ACL injury, signalling the Catalan club’s continued faith in his long‑term potential. The move follows his standout displays for Barça Atlètic before the injury halted his progress.
According to SPORT, insiders at Barcelona remain convinced of the Uruguayan’s potential despite the ACL tear that cut short his first spell with Barça Atlètic. His performances had already marked him as one of the reserve side’s standout players. The Catalan side sees the loan extension as a clear statement of belief in his long‑term development.
The loan was renewed with Defensor Sporting, preserving the existing purchase option while extending his stay at the club. The arrangement was announced alongside a photo credit to Instagram/@patridominguez8, underscoring Barcelona’s public support.
When Pacifico arrived at the Ciutat Esportiva in the winter transfer window, he first dealt with minor muscular issues before debuting. Once fully fit, he quickly established himself in the Barça reserve squad.
His progress was halted in a match against UE Olot, where a torn ACL in his left knee forced him out after just seven appearances. The injury ended his season but did not alter Barcelona’s commitment to his development.
Instead of seeking an immediate permanent transfer, Barcelona worked with Defensor Sporting to extend the loan while keeping the purchase clause intact. The club’s decision signals a willingness to nurture his talent despite short‑term setbacks, while Defensor Sporting retains a potential future sale.
