£9 million record fee frames Craig Gordon’s quiet retirement

🇬🇧 By 4All Football Editorial ·

£9 million, a British record fee for a goalkeeper, marked Craig Gordon’s 2007 move to Sunderland and now frames the 43‑year‑old’s retirement after a 25‑year career that ended with a second spell at Heart of Midlothian and a place in Scotland’s World Cup squad.

In 2007 the Black Cats paid Sunderland the £9 million British record fee to sign Gordon from Tynecastle, a milestone that set high expectations for his Premier League impact. Three years later, his close‑range denial of Bolton Wanderers’ Zat Knight entered Premier League folklore, underscoring his shot‑stopping reputation.

A serious knee injury later curtailed his five‑year Sunderland spell, forcing him out of the game for two years. During that period he focused on rehabilitation and took on coaching duties.

Gordon joined Celtic in 2014, where he secured his first league title and added four more over a six‑year, medal‑laden tenure. The Scottish Premiership successes cemented his status as a domestic champion before his return to Hearts.

Back at Heart of Midlothian, Gordon suffered a double leg break in 2022 but recovered to resume playing. His comeback demonstrated resilience after another major lay‑off.

Internationally, Gordon earned his first Scotland cap in 2004 and accumulated 84 senior appearances, keeping 30 clean sheets. He featured in roughly two‑thirds of his club matches as shutouts and amassed 766 first‑team games across all clubs. A loan stint of 13 matches at Cowdenbeath in the 2001‑02 season formed part of his early career.

His final appearances came in a pre‑World Cup win over Curacao in May and a 2‑2 draw with Celtic in January. He will bid farewell to Hearts supporters in a friendly against Rayo Vallecano at Tynecastle.

The contrast between Gordon’s record‑breaking transfer and his modest retirement underscores a career defined by high‑profile moves and steadfast dedication.
