World Cup

Why Barcelona’s signing of Anthony Gordon now makes perfect sense

🇬🇧

Barcelona completed the signing of English winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United just before the World Cup, a move that has since been validated by his performances in Qatar. The Catalan club’s interest in the 22-year-old extends beyond his pace on the wing, with Gordon showcasing qualities that align closely with Hansi Flick’s tactical demands.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona had identified several strengths in Gordon’s game long before the tournament. His ability to combine with teammates, attack open spaces and contribute defensively has only strengthened the case for the signing. These attributes were on full display during England’s World Cup campaign, where Gordon began to hit his stride.

One of Gordon’s standout traits is his capacity to link play in dangerous zones rather than remain static on the flank. His willingness to drift between wide and central positions allows him to create numerical superiority around opposing defences. Flick’s system prioritises quick combinations and intelligent movement, and Gordon’s versatility offers a new dimension to Barça’s attack.

His passing has also drawn particular attention. Against Congo, Gordon drifted inside, combined effectively with teammates and delivered the assist for Harry Kane’s second goal. The move encapsulated his ability to attack deeper areas before releasing the best available option. Speed remains a key asset, with Gordon recording the highest speed of any player at 35.7 km/h in the group-stage win over Mexico.

Defensive contributions have further enhanced his profile. Against Mexico, with England down to ten men, Gordon’s pressing, intensity in duels and defensive recovery were instrumental in limiting the damage. Barcelona have often lacked a direct threat capable of exploiting open spaces at pace, and Gordon’s profile addresses that need.

The German manager has repeatedly emphasised the importance of players who can contribute both offensively and defensively, and Gordon fits that mould. His willingness to work without the ball and his capacity to impact transitions make him a systemic fit for Flick’s evolving project at Camp Nou.

Gordon’s first season at Barcelona will be closely watched, but every performance in Qatar has reinforced the logic behind his arrival. The club’s proactive approach in securing him ahead of the tournament now appears fully justified.
