United chase midfield balance with Belgium captain Tielemans
Manchester United have signed Belgium captain Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million, activating his release clause at Villa Park and sealing a four‑year contract at Old Trafford. The move directly tackles a midfield void that has lingered since the summer, a gap that grew after key departures.
The void widened when Elliot Anderson left for Manchester City for £116 million and Mateus Fernandes moved to Tottenham for £85 million, leaving United short of creative depth. Those exits forced the club to seek a new engine to restore balance in the centre of the park.
Tielemans’ fee of £35 million triggered his release clause at Villa Park and the four‑year deal was signed at Old Trafford. The agreement provides United with a proven Premier League midfielder while securing a long‑term commitment at the heart of the squad.
United’s summer activity also saw a missed target in Brazilian midfielder Ederson, a £35 million move abandoned after a medical, though an Atalanta option remains on the table. The club’s other signings include Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48 million and goalkeeper Karl Darlow joining on a free transfer from Leeds.

Describing the switch as “special”, Tielemans said on 14 July 2026, “It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United. Signing for such a special club feels incredible.” The midfielder brings a proven record, having scored the winner for Leicester in the 2021 FA Cup final and featuring in Aston Villa’s Europa League triumph over Freiburg in May. He also lifted the Europa League trophy with Villa last season, as reported by PA.Manchester United spend €41m on Tielemans as midfield revamp continues
United’s director of football Jason Wilcox praised Tielemans’ Premier League pedigree, noting, “Youri has consistently been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League throughout the past seven years. His consistency is exceptional, and he will add further composure, creativity and leadership to our squad.” Looking ahead, United must integrate Tielemans into a midfield already reshaped by recent arrivals while monitoring the situation with Ederson and the possible Atalanta option. The club’s ambition to challenge for the biggest honours will hinge on how quickly the new signing adapts to the demands of Old Trafford.
