Reading target midfield upgrade with Bristol City Stokes on loan

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Reading have secured midfielder Josh Stokes on a season‑long loan from Championship side Bristol City, adding the 22‑year‑old to their squad for the 2024‑25 campaign as they look to strengthen their midfield options. The move brings a proven League One performer to the Royals, addressing a need for more attacking depth.

The loan agreement runs for the full season, giving Reading a versatile option while allowing Bristol City to monitor his development. Stokes arrives with experience in England’s lower tiers, having already impressed at League One level.

Stokes spent the second half of last season on loan at fellow League One side Stockport County, scoring five goals in 26 appearances and helping the club reach the Vertu Trophy and the play‑off finals. His contribution demonstrated an ability to influence high‑stakes matches.

Earlier in the 2024‑25 campaign he featured for Cambridge United, netting eight times in 34 games, further proving his knack for regular goal involvement. Those numbers underline his consistency across different teams.

Royals boss Leam Richardson praised the midfielder, saying, "He's creative, positive in possession and has the ability to unlock defences, whether that's with a pass, by carrying the ball or by contributing goals himself. He's got a fantastic attitude. He wants to improve, he's hungry to work every day and he's fully bought into what we're trying to build here." The quote highlights the confidence the club places in his potential.

For Reading, the loan provides a versatile attacking option with a proven scoring record in League One, while Bristol City benefit from Stokes gaining valuable first‑team experience and returning more seasoned for future plans.
