Palace's defensive rebuild faces a €25m price tag

🇬🇧

Crystal Palace are searching for a new centre‑back after Maxence Lacroix attracted interest from Chelsea, leaving a potential gap in their defensive line. The club have turned their attention to 23‑year‑old England youth international Charlie Cresswell, who has agreed personal terms with Stade Rennais.

Charlie Cresswell, 23, left his formative club Leeds United in 2024 and joined Toulouse FC in France. Since arriving, the centre‑back has thrived in Ligue 1, establishing himself as a promising defensive prospect.

Crystal Palace see Cresswell as a potential replacement for Maxence Lacroix, who is also being pursued by Chelsea. Palace’s need for a robust centre‑back has intensified as they plan for the upcoming season.

According to a report by Luke Entwistle, Cresswell has reached an agreement on personal terms with Stade Rennais. Rennes are set to return to European competition next season, adding further appeal to the deal.

The transfer, however, hinges on negotiations with Toulouse FC, which is demanding a €25 million fee for the defender. The French club aims to raise significant funds through player sales this summer.

If Palace can meet the valuation, they could secure Cresswell’s services before the window closes; otherwise the deal may stall, leaving the English side to seek alternative options.
