Midfield makeover: United’s £48m Santos signing fuels Tielemans chase

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·
Manchester United have completed the £48 million signing of Brazil international Andrey Santos from Chelsea, with the 22‑year‑old passing his medical and signing a contract until June 2031, plus an option for a further year. The transfer, announced alongside a Getty Images photo of director of football Jason Wilcox with the new midfielder, also brings United a step closer to securing Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans. Jason Wilcox said, “Andrey is an outstanding midfielder with excellent technical qualities and the ability to impact the game at both ends of the pitch,” adding that Santos was a key target for United in an important position and his development potential excites the club. United’s midfield overhaul follows the departure of Casemiro and a knee injury to Manuel Ugarte, leaving Kobbie Mainoo as the only experienced central midfielder. Santos arrived at Old Trafford after featuring in Chelsea’s squad that won the Club World Cup in 2025 and making 43 appearances for the Blues last season. He has also represented Brazil at senior level, although he missed the recent World Cup. Michael Carrick, United’s head coach, welcomed the midfielder, stating, “Everything about Manchester United is special. As a midfielder, I am really excited to have the opportunity to learn from Michael Carrick.” Santos has already begun training and could feature early in United’s pre‑season campaign, which starts against Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July. United’s pursuit of Youri Tielemans is aided by a release clause in his Aston Villa contract, smoothing negotiations. The 29‑year‑old was a key figure in Belgium’s run to the World Cup quarter‑finals before pulling out of the 2‑1 defeat by Spain due to injury. United also missed out on Elliot Anderson to Manchester City and saw Mateus Fernandes move to Tottenham Hotspur from West Ham. The club’s earlier interest in goalkeeper Ederson collapsed after a United‑United States medical flagged an injury issue following Brazil’s last‑16 loss to Norway, and the £35 million Atalanta deal was shelved. Reports link Dobbin to a £9 million Southampton move and Lammens to a post‑World Cup situation, keeping the transfer saga alive across Sport headlines. If United can finalise the Tielemans deal, it would calm a fanbase uneasy about summer midfield priorities and reinforce the squad’s ability to compete for major trophies.
