Mexico's fan noise campaign to unsettle Ecuador before World Cup tie

Mexico’s supporters staged an overnight noise barrage outside the hotel where Ecuador’s squad was lodged, hoping to deny the South American side a restful night before their Round of 32 World Cup match on Tuesday.

Organised via social media, the fans accepted personal inconvenience, sacrificing their own short‑term comfort to bolster Mexico’s 2026 World Cup hopes.

Fans arrived between midnight and the early hours, filling the streets with cheers that could be heard from the hotel rooms.

Video footage suggests the volume was sufficient to reach the players inside.

The intensity was described as potentially loud enough for the players to hear the cheers from their rooms.

The explicit aim was to prevent Ecuadorian players from getting a good night’s sleep.

Whether the noise actually kept them awake will only be evident after Tuesday’s game.

Ecuador is unlikely to acknowledge any disturbance before or after the match.

Similar fan‑driven disturbances have been reported across Latin America, according to the Associated Press.

Ecuador may have prepared by using ear plugs or white‑noise devices to mitigate the disruption.

If Ecuador appears sluggish on the pitch, Mexico’s supporters will claim their effort paid off.

Conversely, a strong performance by Ecuador would suggest the noise had little effect.
