Merino’s late strike saved Spain — but the Arsenal man never expected it
Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino admitted he never expected to be selected for Spain’s World Cup squad earlier this year. The 30-year-old scored the decisive goal for Spain against Portugal on Monday, sending his nation into the quarter-finals.
Merino’s winner came six minutes after he entered the match as a substitute in a goalless stalemate. After winning a foul in midfield, he played a quick free-kick to Fabian Ruiz, then made a forward run that Ferran Torres exploited with a precise pass. Merino finished low into the corner to make it 1-0.
The goal echoed his Euro 2024 quarter-final winner against Germany, but Merino stressed this moment felt even more meaningful. He described the emotion of delivering joy to fans at home after a difficult period.
“It’s the second time I’ve experienced this, but you never get used to this kind of joy,” Merino said. “In such a beautiful match, given how hard we fought for it, being able to bring joy to people at home is an incredible feeling.”
Merino had not played a competitive minute from January 25 to May 24 due to foot surgery. His return to action was limited to a 28-minute cameo in Arsenal’s Premier League game against Crystal Palace. He was an unused substitute in the Champions League final.
Despite his club struggles, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente included Merino in the World Cup squad. The midfielder’s impact on Monday vindicated the decision, even if he plays no further role in the tournament.
“There have been ups and downs. That’s life, good moments and bad. I thought I wouldn’t even make it to the World Cup, and today I’m on top of the world,” Merino added. “It’s a reward for the effort, the hard work, and the support of my loved ones.”
