Mahrez ends Algeria career after World Cup exit in Qatar

Riyad Mahrez announced his retirement from the Algerian national team on Friday morning, after the side's 2-0 defeat to Switzerland in the World Cup round of 16 on Friday night. The 35‑year‑old forward said the loss confirmed his decision to step away from international football. “It was a match we could have won,” Mahrez said immediately after the game. “We conceded two goals because of our own mistakes, and at this level you pay the price. We didn’t play badly, but we gave away too many goals to still hope for a result.” He then confirmed that the Friday night fixture would be his final appearance for Algeria. “My last match for the national team. It was my last tournament,” Mahrez declared.

Mahrez leaves the international stage with 119 caps, 40 goals and 45 assists to his name. His contributions have placed him among Algeria’s most capped players. At club level, Mahrez remains under contract with Saudi Arabian side Al‑Ahli until mid‑2027. The 35‑year‑old will continue his professional career there after ending his international duties.
