London City’s £500k gamble on Diani aims to close scoring gap

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

London City Lionesses have a clear need for a proven goal‑scorer after finishing sixth in their debut WSL season and losing a star striker to the departing European giant Lyon. Signing France forward Kadidiatou Diani is intended to fill that gap and push the club toward Champions League qualification.

Diani arrives with more than 100 caps for France and was the second‑highest scorer at the 2023 World Cup, underscoring her pedigree at the highest international level. Her experience adds a rare blend of World Cup pedigree and domestic success to a squad still building its identity.

The 31‑year‑old announced her departure from Lyon on Monday, even though she had a year left on her contract, and immediately entered advanced talks with London City. After weeks of negotiation and interest from other European clubs, Diani chose a move to the Women’s Super League (WSL).

London City secured Diani on a three‑year deal for a fee exceeding £500,000, confirming the club’s willingness to invest heavily in talent. The transfer fee and contract length signal a strategic shift toward assembling a front line capable of challenging for the Champions League.

During three seasons at Lyon, Diani scored 41 goals in 93 appearances after moving from Paris St-Germain in 2023. She won two French Cups and a league title with PSG, but missed out on Women’s Champions League success with Lyon, losing twice in the final and missing the most recent final through a knee injury as Barcelona beat Lyon 2‑0.

"It is an opportunity for me to discover a new country, a new city, a new team, and I can't wait to start this next chapter," Diani said. She added, "It's an independent club and very ambitious. It's something which is quite rare in women's football and something I believe in a lot." She also stressed, "We have objectives – to win as many matches as possible and qualify for the Champions League. Winning a trophy for this club would be brilliant too. I think we are going to experience a very beautiful season."

Diani will be reunited with owner Michele Kang, who also controls Lyon and Washington Spirit, reinforcing the multi‑club ownership model. London City’s recent window also brought two‑time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas, former England goalkeeper Mary Earps and Spain defender Mapi Leon, expanding a squad that already includes young England international Freya Godfrey.

The signing sits within a Hollywood‑style recruitment drive that previously saw Sweden captain Kosovare Asllani and a world‑record fee for Grace Geyoro. While the club’s total revenue remains undisclosed, WSL rules cap player earnings at 80% of club revenue plus up to £4 million in additional investment, prompting debate over financial sustainability.

Looking ahead, Diani’s experience and goal‑scoring record give London City a realistic chance to qualify for the Champions League, but the club must navigate salary‑cap constraints and scrutiny over multi‑club ownership. The season will test whether the £500k gamble can translate into trophies and European success, a challenge that will define the club’s ambition in the Super League.

The club hopes to become a St beacon for women's football, showcasing how strategic signings can reshape a rising side.
