Liverpool’s £60m gamble on Jacquet as Konate’s successor
Jeremy Jacquet completed a £60 million transfer to Liverpool on Wednesday, positioning the 20‑year‑old French centre‑back as the likely successor to Ibrahima Konate, who has departed for Real Madrid. The move follows Konate’s exit and adds a high‑profile defensive option for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Liverpool moved quickly to secure a replacement after Ibrahima Konate transferred to Real Madrid. The club identified Jeremy Jacquet as a long‑term solution for the centre‑back role.
Jacquet, only 20, has struggled with injury setbacks and has yet to amass extensive professional minutes. Nevertheless, his physical presence and potential have attracted interest from top clubs.
"Jacquet signing takes on a bit of a new meaning now," Adam Beattie told BBC Radio Merseyside. "He comes in, potentially depending on what else we do in the transfer market, as the Konate successor, which is a big ask for someone of his age and someone who's had the injury problems that he's had."
Beattie added that the fee is substantial for a player with limited experience, but praised Jacquet’s size and talent. He also suggested that Liverpool might still consider adding another centre‑back if possible.
During the same broadcast, discussions turned to a possible acquisition of Paris St‑Germain forward Bradley Barcola and likely midfield departures. Beattie expressed hope that Curtis Jones will remain at Liverpool.
For Jacquet, the £60 million move places immediate expectations to fill Konate’s void at Anfield. For Liverpool, the signing provides physical depth while leaving the door open for further defensive reinforcement.
