Liverpool faces a £130m Barcola gamble as Hughes eyes Al‑Hilal exit

🇬🇧

Liverpool face a critical transfer decision as sporting director Richard Hughes prepares to depart for Al‑Hilal, leaving a strategic void that must be filled before the summer window closes. The club’s next big‑money move must outperform the proposed €130m acquisition of French winger Bradley Barcola to avoid further squad regression.

Recent reports indicate Hughes will join Saudi Arabian side Al‑Hilal after the summer, confirming long‑standing speculation about his exit. His long‑time assistant Steven Francis has already taken up a role at the Saudi club, suggesting the transition is imminent.

Liverpool’s recent transfer activity has seen the squad move backwards, with the club sacrificing several top talents in recent windows. This regression heightens the pressure on the outgoing sporting director to leave on a positive note.

The proposed £130m deal for Bradley Barcola has been widely criticised as excessive, especially after his modest display against Paraguay, where France managed only limited chances. Barcola recorded just 30 touches in an hour, while substitute Desire Doue amassed 32 touches in 30 minutes, created more chances and won a penalty. The €130m valuation has been linked to Paris Saint-Germain, who have yet to justify the amount.

Barcola’s sole effort was a 30‑yard strike that missed the target, underscoring concerns about his ability to justify a six‑figure fee. Although described as a fantastic winger, analysts argue he is a level below the elite, making the price tag appear a massive mistake.

The club’s recent €130m outlay on Alexander Isak, another forward who has not met expectations, already totals €250m for two under‑performing signings. Such spending could jeopardise Liverpool’s long‑term financial health if not corrected.

Liverpool must now secure a new sporting director and identify a smarter marquee signing to halt the costly trend. The main obstacles are the inflated price tag on Barcola and the need to rebuild a squad that has lost its competitive edge.
